Carrie Haymond
Classroom Teacher
Carrie Haymond-Hesketh has been creatively engaging young children in the act of making music since 1992 when she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Vocal Music Performance from James Madison University. A native of New Jersey and born into a musical family, Carrie’s career path took flight after experiencing the joys of teaching Kindermusik, an early childhood music curriculum, to young children. This inspired her to earn a Masters Degree in Music Education at Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ.
Moving to Rochester in 1996, Carrie immediately distinguished herself as an energetic teacher in the Rochester City School District through her involvement in a variety of integrated programs such as the Genesee River Valley Project at Schools #6 and #30, and the Universal Pre-Kindergarten Building Blocks Music Program. Carrie received her Orff Level I and II training at Eastman School of Music, and studied with renowned music educator, Doug Goodkin, in California to receive her Level III certification. In 2004 Carrie received a Fund for Teachers Grant to attend an international seminar at the Orff Institute in Salzburg, Austria.
Carrie has developed a unique model for music education at the Genesee Community Charter School, which she believes best meets the academic needs and desires of the students. She has explored countless ways to integrate science and social studies content such as geology, ornithology, and Egyptology into her music lessons. Carrie has been well received by classroom teachers and music educators who have attended her master classes on the subject of arts integration at Expeditionary Learning’s national conferences. Her current project is in sharing her music education experiences with two schools in Springfield, Massachussetts, which is funded by a Federal Arts Grant.
