Have to Have a Habitat
SPRING, 2006-2007
Throughout the “Have to Have a Habitat” expedition, kindergarteners searched for answers to the following questions:“What do birds need?” “Why do different birds live in different places?” “How does each bird’s body help it get what it needs from its habitat?” and “How can we help birds get what they need?”
Through a series of learning experiences and field studies, they found out which birds live in local woodland and water habitats. They studied the life cycle of a duck by hatching ducks in the classroom and looking at the special structures ducks have to help them thrive in their habitats. Students worked in crews to study the anatomical features of a woodland or water bird.
The final product was a student-created performance representing how birds survive in their habitats. The class had an opportunity at the end of the expedition to provide a service for area birds.
