Is Pluto a Planet?

FALL, 2007-2008

How do astronomers know what they know? What makes a planet a planet? What are all those objects in space and how are they connected to one another? During this expedition, students investigate the mysteries of space as they search for answers to these questions.

Students also dive into the recent controversy over Pluto’s “demotion” from planet status. Using the Earth as a starting point, students explore the characteristics of the planets in our solar system, and develop their own theories on what makes a planet a planet. Students use their blossoming knowledge to revise their theories and offer their own perspective on Pluto’s rightful place in our solar system.
