FALL, 2010-2011

Fifth grade will focus on the rich history ofthe Rochester area, examining local figures who courageously challengedoppression in the 19th century.  This study of oppression will focus on the movements for theabolition of slavery and for women’s rights.  People who lived in or near Rochester, including Susan B.Anthony, Frederick Douglass, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Harriett Tubman, Isaac andAmy Post, and Austin Steward, will provide lenses into the lives of thoseaffected by oppression and will provide students with an opportunity to examinestrategies and character traits that brought about change.  Fieldwork will take the class tohistorically significant locations in Rochester, as well as Auburn and SenecaFalls, and students will become experts at sharing a local resource as theirfinal product.
