Public Art Matters

WINTER, 2008-2009

In this Expedition, the sixth grade will focus on public art in Rochester.  In November a representative from the ArtWalk 2 planning committee invited our class to make a meaningful contribution to the expansion of public art in Rochester.  We are initially answering this call by highlighting several pieces of local public art that already exist in Rochester through a written product that will be unveiled to the community by the end of the Expedition.  We will also tour several studios and sites to see how and where the art is made through an investigation of the scientific principles of matter and by taking a close look into metals that comprise much of the public art in Rochester.
Through this expedition, the students will work to answer guiding questions such as: How can public art include the public interests? and How does public art tell Rochester’s story? As we endeavor to uncover these questions we will survey members of the community and share our results as a portion of the report to the ArtWalk 2 committee in the spring.
