In Our Own Backyard

SPRING, 2008-2009

Over the last two years, first graders have discovered how Rochester has changed from a warm sea to a village to the city we see today.  We have learned how the natural world has changed as time passed and more and more people came to live here.  In this expedition, we will look closer at the city and into our own backyards to find out what happened to the natural world as the city grew?  First graders will study local habitats and the plants and animals that live there.  They will also uncover the special features of animals that have helped them to survive in their habitats. We will meet with city planners too. Students will share what they have learned by creating a calendar that highlights our local habitats and the plants and animals that live there. We will also feature some local habitat “heroes” who have taken extra care of the natural world, right here in our own backyards of Rochester.
