Recycle the Planet
FALL, 2009-2010
A visit to the Genesee River Gorge in Rochester, NY, provides a unique glimpse into the history of our planet. You can find evidence of a time when marine animals called this place home. You can see how successive millennia of sediment have created the strata that climb up the gorge wall. The river itself betrays the lingering effects of glacial advance and retreat that took place here. But how do we know this all happened? Science and our senses help us better understand our Natural World and how geologic events have shaped this region. Students will become experts on the Genesee River Gorge through fieldwork, research, readings and reflection. Students will examine the Genesee River from its source to its mouth, providing the fifth grade class the opportunity to look atthe stories left behind in stone.
