Chess Club is Coming!

Chess Club will be returning in January for the fifth consecutive year!  It was started by GCCS alumnus Linden Burack during his 6th grade year (he is now in 10th grade).  Many of the students who played in GCCS chess club are now competing with their middle and high school teams!

What is Chess Club?  A one hour after-school program for students to learn chess strategy and play chess with other students.  Chess instruction is provided by experts from the Rochester Chess Center (

Who is allowed to sign up for Chess Club?  Any GCCS student who likes to play chess.  Beginners to advanced players are welcome.  The only requirement is that you enjoy playing chess!

When is Chess Club?  Wednesdays after Community Circle, January – April.  This year, Chess Club dates will be: January 8, 15, 22, 29; February 5, 26; March 4, 11, 18, 25; April 1.

Where does Chess Club happen?  We play in designated classrooms and pick up is on the patio afterwards.  A carpool is available for students who need transportation support.

Why don’t we have Chess Club all year?  In a word, SPACE!  GCCS teachers generously allow us to use their classrooms on Wednesday afternoons for chess club during the winter months.

How do I sign up for Chess Club?  We are changing the process of collecting forms this year.  Please watch for further information. The order paper that forms are received will determine wait-list, if needed.

How much does Chess Club cost?  We want everyone interested in chess to be able to participate, regardless of financial circumstances.  Donations to the GCCS Family Association help “pay it forward” to make sure the program can continue next year.  A suggested donation of $5 per session (or $50 for the full season) covers the cost of the Chess Center teacher and snacks.

Volunteers needed!  Two parent chaperones are needed each week from 1-2:30 PM.  Duties include escorting kids to and from the classrooms, helping the chess instructors during instruction, and supervising the kids after chess club until they are picked up.  You can sign up here:

We are looking forward to another successful season of chess!
